Booking High-Speed Trains on 12306 with a Foreign Passport

China's high-speed rail network is the world's largest and often the best way to travel between cities: Beijing to Shanghai in about 4.5 hours, city-center to city-center. The official ticketing platform is 12306, and yes — it works with foreign passports.

What 12306 is

The 12306 app and website (www.12306.cn) are run by China State Railway. Third-party resellers (Trip.com, etc.) add a service fee and sometimes their own queues; booking directly on 12306 is the cheapest and most reliable option, with tickets released typically 15 days before departure.

Creating an account with a passport

1. Install the China Railway 12306 app (or use www.12306.cn — the app has an English interface; the website is mostly Chinese).
2. Sign up with your email or phone number.
3. When adding your identity document, choose Passport, enter the number exactly as printed, and upload a clear photo of the photo page.
4. Online verification usually completes within a few hours (occasionally up to 24). Until then, you cannot book — so register a day or two before you need tickets.

Once verified, your passport becomes your ticket: no paper collection, no station queues for collection machines.

Booking

Search your route, pick a train, and choose a seat class. Second class (二等座) on high-speed "G" trains is comfortable — roughly airplane economy with more legroom. Add any co-travelers' passports under "Passengers" to book together.

Payment inside the app supports Alipay, WeChat Pay, and international cards — which links neatly to setting up Alipay before your trip.

At the station and on board

• Enter the station: scan your passport at the manual check lane (self-service gates increasingly accept passports too — look for the light on the gate).
• Security check: X-ray for bags as at airports; arrive 30–45 minutes early.
• Boarding: gates close 5 minutes before departure and open roughly 15–20 minutes before. Your car and seat are on the ticket in the app.
• On board, the ticket inspector may scan your passport; keep it reachable.

Practical tips

• Popular routes sell out on Friday evenings and holidays; book the moment tickets release.
• You can change or cancel in the app before departure for a small fee; after the train departs, tickets are largely non-refundable.
• Station names ending in "East/South/West/North" matter — check which station your hotel is nearest before booking.
• Free hot water is available at every car end; instant noodles are a time-honored onboard tradition.
